Almost to Montezuma

A group of seniors who frequent the Senior Center made an excursion west, recently, and enjoyed some good groceries at the restaurant this side of Montezuma.  It was a beautiful day, and everybody had a good time seeing the sights of Hawkinsville, Eastman, Cedar Grove, and the Crossroads.

Have you ever seen such a big pecan tree?

Get Ready for the Judgement Day

.
The Soperton Garden Club is sponsoring Christmas decorations judging on Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 @Dark:30.
Remember to spot outdoor scenery.  If not spotted any highlighted, it can't be judged.
Santa's secret judges are pulling at the reigns to begin.
Good luck!
- Kathryn Fowler
Click here: Get ready for the judgment day

Photo tip for outdoor decorations:
Turn on your lights at twilight and make your pictures then to capture some background.
Use tripod if your camera speed is slow.  You may start at early twilight and make new shots every 10 to 15 minutes.
Choose the shots that look the best. If too dark, start earlier.

"Be Diligent in Thanks-Giving

A diligent hawk stands guard on the
cross of the First Baptist Church steeple.
"Be diligent in thanks-giving," wrote the Owl Tree Gallery of Lenoir City, Tennessee, last Thanksgiving.  We urge you to go to their link for a meaningful Thanksgiving message, including President Lincoln's Proclamation of Thanksgiving.

Learn more about ethanol:

Biomass: A Federal Perspective
By Ron Kotrba
An article for those who want to be really "up" on ethanol and biomass.

Range Fuels' Process in a Nutshell

Range Fuels’ Soperton Plant is a first-of-its-kind plant to commercially produce low-carbon biofuels from non-food, renewable biomass. The plant employs Range Fuels’ two-step thermo-chemical process to convert woody biomass into cellulosic biofuels, including cellulosic ethanol and methanol. The first step volatilizes and gasifies the biomass to synthesis gas. The second step converts the synthesis gas to cellulosic biofuels, including methanol and ethanol, using a proprietary catalyst and reactor system.

The second step has not yet been realized.  High cost of the enzyme catalyst has been cited by the company. - Blog Editor

Cellulosic Methanol Production
Range Fuels, Inc. has produced cellulosic methanol from the initial phase of its cellulosic biofuels plant near Soperton, Georgia. Range Fuels’ two-step thermochemical process uses heat, pressure and steam to convert nonfood biomass, such as woody biomass and grasses, into a synthesis gas composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The syngas is then passed over a proprietary catalyst to produce mixed alcohols that are separated and processed to yield a variety of low-carbon biofuels, including cellulosic ethanol and methanol. “We are ecstatic to be producing cellulosic methanol from our Soperton Plant, and are on track to begin production of cellulosic ethanol in the third quarter of this year,” says David Aldous, Range Fuels’ President and CEO. “This milestone is a giant step in overcoming the technological and financing challenges facing the commercialization of cellulosic biofuels.” The methanol can be further processed into biodiesel. The Soperton Plant is permitted to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol and methanol each year. For more information, visit www.rangefuels.com.

Safer Seating for the Mayor

Unknown to Mayor Reggie Evans and Artifact Expert Harold Powell, the secondary pew at Crow Mart has always been a dangerous place to sit.  Notice how the bottom separates from the back. Also notice that Fixer-Upper Kennon Peebles, Proprietor Crow Moxley, and Analyst/Commentator Buddy Byrd chose the sturdier pew.

Last Saturday Kennon repaired the blue pew with sheet metal and screws, so it's just as safe as the other one.  A blessing of both pews will be held if we can find a priest who is willing.

Something to feel good about

.

It's a week later and by now this cotton is picked, but the autumn leaves are more beautiful.  Probably the prettiest crop of fall leaves ever in Treutlen County.  They're going fast. Be sure to drive around and enjoy them this weekend.  We may never see them so pretty again.  Hum "Autumn Leaves" if you like.

Young at Heart Honors Veterans & Law Enforcement

Eloise Baker with the assistance of her daughter, Sharon Spivey, again has led the Young at Heart to give special recognition to the community's veterans and law enforcement personnel.  The attendance was less than usual due to the untimely death of Eleanor Williams, which shocked the community and brought the Sheriff's Department and City Police on full alert in trying to solve the crime.

A few pictures are shown here, while others are on the slideshow.  Click to stop the show and see the larger versions of the photos.  You are invited to leave comments on the photos, too.

Jones County dropped the ball, and Treutlen grabbed and ran with it

Chuck Ellington in the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
"The way I look at it is, this [Race to the Top] is going to be the road map in Georgia for the next few years pretty much," Supt. Chuck Ellington said. "We have some good teachers and they deserve an opportunity at merit pay if that develops."
If merit pay is the way of the future, the systems involved through Race to the Top "will help drive the train on it," he said. "I see it as a win-win."

Richard Lee Baker's Car Wash

.
During the Altamaha EMC open house, we dropped by to see Richard Lee Baker's Car Wash right next to the pole yard on North Third Street.  He laughed when we told him "Mr. Baker, you used to be in the middle of town, and now the town is coming to you!"

He's been a fixture of Soperton for longer than most of us can remember.  He worked with J. C. Stephens at his service station that's now part of the property of the McLeod's owners.

The above photo was made in the summer of 1980 during a rain when people huddled under the roof of the old Peterson station where the car wash was located then.  When the picture was displayed on Facebook, it received rave reviews, even described as "Americana".  The photographer has since given Mr. Baker a copy.

When you have your car or truck washed at Mr. Baker's place, you're dealing with Soperton's most experienced man in the car wash business.

Beauty in Death

How sad!
The red fox was long dead when we found it on GA 86,
just east of the Lumley place.
Not often do we see such a beautiful animal so close.
Death is the fox poem's theme.

"Hunting Song"
   by Donald Finkel

The fox he came lolloping, lolloping,

Lolloping.  His eyes were bright,
His ears were high.
He was like death at the end of a string
When he came to the hollow
Log.  He ran in one side
And out of the other.  O
He was sly.

The hounds they came tumbling, tumbling,
Tumbling.  Their heads were low,
Their eyes were red.
The sound of their breath was louder than death
When they came to the hollow
Log.  They boiled at one end
But a bitch found the scent.  O
They were mad.

The hunter came galloping, galloping,
Galloping.  All damp was his mare
From her hooves to her mane.
His coat and his mouth were redder than death
When he came the the hollow
Log.  He took in the rein
And over he went.  O
He was fine.

The log he just lay there, alone in
The clearing.  No fox nor hound
Nor mounted man
Saw his black round eyes in their perfect disguise
(As the ends of a hollow
Log.) He watched death go through him,
Around him and over him.  O
He was wise.
