It Was a Quiet Day in Orianna

Orianna is a girl's name, and it means blonde or sunny.
The Orianna, Georgia, community is partly in Treutlen County and partly in Laurens County.
It once had it's own school and stores.
The Thigpen sheep have a pedigree that goes all the way back to Scotland.

Adrian area map 1914

This section of a 1914 Emanuel County map was photographed from the blue-print copy at the Georgia Archives about five years ago. The faded photograph was enhanced by removing color, darkening the image, and increasing the contrast. It was saved as 8 inch x 8 inch at 200 resolution.

Comments will be appreciated.  Click on the map for a larger view.

Anderson's Barber Shop Now Open on Main Street

While James Willis continues cutting hair at his home shop on Adrian Road, a new barber has moved in at the old Willis location next to the Crow-Mart on Main Street. As far back as the early 1960's the building usually has had a barber as a tenant, including Willis's Uncle J. D. Webb.

Anderson's Barber Shop has a growing business. Mr. Anderson also works in law enforcement in Laurens County.

Local History: The building was the first location of the Bank of Soperton, founded in 1903, the year that the town received it's City Charter.

TES Students Ride in a White Limousine

Many Treutlen Countians are enjoying homebaked cookies these days after Treutlen Elementary School students had a successful sale. One of the rewards for the top 10 sellers was to ride in a limousine to Longhorn's in Dublin for lunch last Tuesday.  School is closed all this week for Thanksgiving Holidays.

A big thank you to everybody who bought cookie dough!

Riders in the Sky

These are two of the 18 sky riders which were circling Soperton last Thursday afternoon. They were so spread out and high that the zoom lens was all the way out to reach these two.

What Kind of Animule Is This?

Jodi and Tony at the Soperton Ice Plant show off their latest critter, which may be mistaken as a horse, but look at those long ears. It's so healthy that it looks stuffed. Glenda, who is camera shy, made it and Hyman helped with the heavy wire.

Deer Processing Underway at Rockledge

.

.

.
One Soperton hunter said he took his boat out on the Oconee River earlier this week and came back with three nice deer he found on some high ground. Some of the older sportsmen remember back when they had to go to Wilkinson County and other places with legal seasons, because the native deer were rare in Treutlen County. DNR started stocking deer in the early 70's.

Now there are plenty of local deer. Some people would say too many. Along with the growing deer population and popularity of deer hunting, the economy has been enhanced by entrepreneurs who cater to the needs of hunters.

One such business is H&H Deer Processing in the community of Rockledge, run by Jimmy Hutcheson, member of the Treutlen High School Class of 1979.

"I've been doing this now for four years," Hutcheson says, "and the business keeps on growing."

Since the beginning of deer season he has been busy seven days a week, from 8 to 8, processing deer for the hunters who kill them. He keeps records of the county in which each deer is taken and makes detailed orders according every customer's wishes.

His operation has plenty of refrigerator and freezer space. He cuts and processes the meat in a variety of ways: whole hams and shoulders, roasts, tenderloin, back strap, butterfly back strap.

Some customers prefer ground meat and cubed cuts. Stew meat, jerky strips are part of some orders. Sausage can be done in mild, medium, or hot.

Hutcheson serves many customers from the local area, but some come from far away places for the hunting season. He has regular customers from Atlanta, Florida, Tennessee, and as far away as Texas.

Jimmy Hutcheson is another Treutlen citizen who makes this a great place to live. You may reach him at 478-689-8493.
