Yes, we do have an ice house in Treutlen County.
.
While regular travelers on Main Street already know that Soperton has an ice house. But part of our mission is to inform Treutlen people who have been away for a long time. The E-NEWS is like a letter from home for such internet users. They have sent messages by mail, e-mail, and cellphone.

Remember the brick service station that once stood on the corner of Main and First Street. (Now it's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, abbreviated MLK.) In the 1950's Reginald Dukes operated the station, Lonnie McDaniel and family in the 1960's and 70's. The building was demolished providing a nice parking lot for Frances Johnson Florist, as she and Charles own the site. Jennifer's Florist is now the occupant of the building, now owned by Pharmacist Wesley Crowe and cohorts. In the 1950's the building was used by R.M. Sparks in his company that sold slot machines and Seeburg juke boxes.

Enough history. Look up our article on the Soperton Ice Plant, our old ice house. Kendall Mimbs Owns the new ice house, and he has others in other towns in the area. It's a factory-built house with a refrigeration unit on top and conveyors inside to move the ice to the front of the building. Customers put their currency and coins in the slots. Ice can be dispensed into the customer's own containers or into big, sturdy plastic bags.

The painted area in the back corner is left from the tiny building (between the old station and Sparks/Crowe building) which was used by The Soperton News before the Lawtons sold the paper to Bill Ledford of Vidalia (about 1963)
