Yellow butterfly season is ending. They show up every year about the first week of August, few in number, as the days pass and haze begins to fade away to bluer skies, the butterflies become more plentiful. In September the days are cooler and dryer and the darting, flickering spots of yellow are everywhere. The pecans start dropping brown leaves, as other hardwoods starting turning yellow, orange, and some to red. The evening sunlight takes on a yellowish tint enhancing the golden rod, ditch daisies, and other yellow flowers.
A week ago the wild flowers along every country road and garden flowers such as phlox were attracting swarms of butterflies. This week we notice that the butterflies are heading south, or at least southeast, as they follow Railroad Avenue, the railroad, and Main Street toward Tarrytown. Where will they stop? The Atlantic Coast? Florida? Africa?
We have enjoyed their season very much.
