Shelia Phillips has seen many rattlesnakes on her place, and this is the second one she found within 500 feet of her house.

"He had 8 rattles  and was huge. I only had 2 bullets," Shelia said, "and missed on the first shot, but I made him a good snake on the second shot."

She tries to get home before dark because of the snakes in the yard, and warns visitors to come during the day. "As long as you visit in the daytime, you can see them. I always make sure the grass is cut to the ground."

One suggestion to help keep snakes off property is to pour a line of sulfur around the perimeter of the yard.

Soperton Native Wins Statewide Ranger-of-the-Year Award

ATLANTA, May 26, 2010  --  Randell Meeks of Soperton, Ga. was named Ranger of the Year by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  The award was presented during the DNR Board’s May meeting in Atlanta.

During the nomination period, Meeks was assistant manager of Elijah Clark State Park north of Augusta.  Shortly after being hired in 2007, the park lost its manager position and Meeks had to quickly learn how to operate a busy state park with 165 campsites and 20 cottages.  He was nominated for the statewide award for adapting to the job’s challenges, his historical programming initiatives, turning an overgrown area of the park into an attractive picnic spot, and inexpensively re-opening old facilities by using scavenged and reused materials.

Meeks just recently was promoted to manager of Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele, which hosts more than 750,000 visitors each year.

Meeks and his wife, Shelia, now live at Georgia Veterans State Park in Crisp County.  His father, Randell Meeks Sr., lives in Treutlen County and his mother, Gail Coleman Jones, lives in Wheeler County.  Meeks graduated from Treutlen County High School in 1991 and received a BS degree from Troy University in 2006.

Harmony Baptist Church Is Growing

Bob Lovett, a member of Harmony Baptist Church, is supervising the ongoing building expansion of the sanctuary. The existing structure has four windows along each side, and two more are being added, practically increasing space by 50 percent. Lovett says that all of the windows will be replaced with memorial windows as donors have come forth to meet the expensive of the entire project.  The pulpit area is being enlarged, and new pews will be added. The new foyer will be full width of the building.
