Letter to TREUTLEN E-NEWS: Library

To the  Editor,

"Around Town",

It has been my pleasure to take advantage of the resources available at the Treutlen Co. Library over the past several years.

It has been my place for job hunting, correspondence as well as the usual resource for books.

As I have been in and out for the past several years many improvements have been made and duely noted.

As I have done a research on Christopher Columbus, and the tie- in with literacy and new discoveries, it has come to my attention that our children's section needs help.

The Treutlen County Library accepts book donations and I know- there are some grandparents out there who bought wonderful children's books for their Children and grandchildren that are sitting on the shelf.

I know this community remembers the "Depression" and it is drilled in us not to throw anything away.  I know. It would not be throwing it away to give to the Library and letting this generation see and read what you have been storing for years.

There may even be a kind lady or gentleman who upon reading this, realizing the importance of literacy- its connection to great societies and perhaps would donate a collection of children's books.

I will go even a step further--if you would like to spend an hour on any given day to read to some children, I know Mrs. Smith would love to hear from you.

Sumner Shows & Tells Court History

County Clerk of Court Connie Sumner took historical memorabilia to the library Sunday afternoon which enhanced her friendly verbal presentation to the Treutlen County Historical Society. Members and visitors were impressed by the new technology being used in court nowadays. Having served many years as deputy to Buddy Rogers, Sumner has been well versed with the old ways and was very instrumental in adapting local records to the computer, making them more accessible at home and in other counties.

She brought the old jury box which was last used in 1990, still bearing the documentation signed by Judge Carlton Warnock. She showed examples of old property records and prints from the computer records. The county legal organ, The Soperton News, of 1919, the first year of operation of the county, was studied closely by the members, too.

President Larry Braddy led the business session. Treasurer Juanita Youmans gave a report and accepted dues. Museum Curator Barbara Simons also reported.

Reminder for Sunday Afternoon

Be sure to attend the quarterly meeting of the Historical Society at the County Library, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Visitors are always welcome! 

Treutlen County Clerk of Court Connie Sumner will speak.

If you have any old Soperton telephone books that you are willing to donate, please take them to the meeting, to help fill out the museum collection.

Kasey Rae Well, we got our little blind puppy off to MN!! I want to thank you for putting my earlier post on your blog. I am emailing this story to a couple of newspapers and am going to include Treutlen E-news in the thank you section. I would also like to tell you and your followers/friends that we are starting our own local animal rescue and need volunteers. It takes dedication and a special love of animals....it takes a special person in general. Spring Is Near!

Wet, cold weather has been hanging around too long but the nesting birds at the Soperton Piglet have been enjoying the fair sunny days in anticipation of the official beginning of Spring. This year Daylight Saving Time will commence before Spring. How about that!
