Yes you can get fried chicken in Orland... and fried catfish, too. Now that Ken Hughes opened Papa K's at the Chevron station on GA 29 at I-16 Tuesday.

Hughes moved his family down from Dublin a year and a half ago after buying the Buck Meeks place on the Orland - Orianna road (Anderson Pond Road. Ken says that he always liked being busy and there's only so much idleness a man can stand. After cutting the grass, fixing up the place, putting up fences he was ready to get back into the food business after running one of the most successful food operation in Laurens County.

Several years ago Ken and the other members of his family went into the meat business, a butcher shop if you will. Their steaks were so fine that they built a big cooker and began serving them to family and friends. Their reputation for quality and service led them went into big-time catering, serving over 800 people in one meal. Is there anybody in these parts who hasn't already heard of Blackshear's Ferry Catering? They got so good at what they do that some folks from out of state made them a financial offer they couldn't turn down. The business was sold in February.

Already Papa K's is growing. An Orland resident reported that the place was wrapped up Thursday night with so much business that they finally ran out of chicken.

Sheriff Corbin at Historical Society Meeting

Sheriff Tommy Corbin addressed members and visitors of the Treutlen County Historical Society Sunday afternoon at the library. He introduced himself, telling many aspects of his career in law enforcement. He brought pictures of the former sheriffs, and the audience recalled memories of the ones they had known. He told about the status of the new jail, due to be finished this Fall, new security provisions planned for the courthouse to be done through federal stimulus funding, and answered questions from the audience.

Yes you can enjoy a gourmet meal in Treutlen County, cooked by a trained, experienced chef.

Before moving to Soperton, Kenton Chelf was chef for the Atlanta Braves organization. He and wife Desiree took over the Peach House on West Main Street in March 2008 and moved downtown last February, creating Big Lou's 2nd Street Bistro.

Small-town folks are interested in local connections. Treutlen native Hugh Brantley is Desiree's stepdad.

The restaurant is at the same spot where Reggie and Barbara Evans once had the Soperton Video Deli, a half-block from the redlight, south on Second Street (Mount Vernon Road).

The food is always fresh-cooked. The Chelfs use vegetables and herbs grown in their own garden.

Kenton says that there is no particular favorite from the menus, but "we serve a lot of chicken salad and potato soup."

Entrees range from a Mexican Platter at $7.75 to Ribeye Steak at $12.00. The platter includes two hand-rolled Enchiladas and a Burrito topped with fresh melted cheeses, topped with fresh lettuce, tomato and avocado, served with fresh salsa and sour cream upon request.

Other entrees include Asian Stir Fry, Roasted pork Tenderloin, Oven Roasted Salmon, Chicken Parmesan, and Lemon Pepper Shrimp.

Humongous burgers are $7.00. Choose from the H Burger, Deuce Burger, Greenwood, Rabbit, Marsh, Dez, Lord Pork Chop, and even the Boring Burger.

For a change from burgers, try the Shrimp Po-Boy: Fried Shrimp topped with a vinegar salad with a spicy tartar sauce on a warmed hoagie roll.

Philly Cheese is always a favorite. Big Lou's is made with thin sliced ribeye steak sauteed with onion and cheese and served on a baked hoagie roll. Only $7.75.

The bistro is named for Kenton's granddad, Lou Mendive.

The very large salads are Mendive Cobb, Simple Caesar, Mixed Green, Taco (chicken or beef). Chicken (grilled or fried) may be added to any salad for $1.50.
