PIECES OF OUR PAST - Dublin, Laurens County and East Central Georgia History
IMAGES OF OUR PAST - THE COURTHOUSE POND, 1963, DUBLIN, GA. - IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 1963 - THE LAURENS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, COMPLETED IN 1896, WAS GONE. A MODERN COURTHOUSE WAS RISING OUT OF THE ANCENT DIRT. COUNTY ATTORNEY DALE THOMPSON AND SUPERIOR COURT CLERK BRANTLEY NEW HAD GROWN TIRED OF A COUPLE OF THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS BOASTING ABOUT A RECENT FISHING TRIP WHEN THEY CAUGHT A BIG MESS OF FISH. THOMPSON AND NEW, 5TH COUSINS AND PRACTICAL JOKERS AS WELL, HIRED A MAN TO RETRIEVE AN EVEN DOZEN LIVING CATFISH. UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS, THE FISHERMAN TO DUMP HIS CATCH INTO THE BASE OF FOUNDATION. SUMMER RAINS DUMPED ABOUT A FOOT OF RAIN INTO THE HOLE. THE COUNTY HIRED JAMES PERRY, A MULTI TALENTED CONTRACTOR TO PUMP OUT THE RAIN WATER. AS THE HOLE WAS ALMOST EMPTY, PERRY AND HIS HANDS NOTICED THE UNUSUAL SIZED CATCHFISH.
