Bits and Pieces of Treutlen County

.

.
Smoke coming out the toilet vent in the Estroff Subdivision.
.

.
Floor poured and finished at the apparently final unit in the new subdivision.
.

.
Rain and high temperature have brought out the mushrooms, even downtown. Haven't seen a fairy circle yet, let us know if you see one.

Soperton Is Growing - Thanks to Hilton Joiner

.
Yesterday, August 18, "the blue sky day" a family from Wisconsin moved in at one of the pretty houses at Hilton Joiner's complex on Mount Vernon Road. What a great idea! Build houses and they will come! More citizens, more taxpayers, more sales for local stores! Why didn't somebody think of it before now? Mayor Evans, you better extend the city limits on the south side, too.

Blue Skies Shining on Me

.
The hurricanes kicked up a rare day in August today. Deep blue skies and huge clouds. Hope everybody noticed. If not, enjoy singing along. You know the song...
.

.

.

.

.
Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see
.
Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long
.
Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly
.
Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

Old Pictures Added

Photos from July 1974 & 1979 are now posted on his blog:

Slight changes in the E-NEWS Format

.
You will notice that our Chief Advisor's picture has been added to the E-NEWS. It's was something we wanted to do back when we started in March, but the old computer couldn't handle it. Our system now is faster, but we are aware that many internet users are still using dial-up. We try to keep the file sizes low for that reason. Let us know if we are doing anything that would slow down your system. Possibly the Grapes feature had too many photos.
.
We'd like to know how often you use our "Local Links" or which are the most popular.
.
We believe that a Bible should be handy, and Bible Gateway is our favorite. Try it and you will see why.
.
The Georgia Newspapers site is rather slow, but once you find your favorites you can make yourself a list of the URL's.
.
Cynthia Reese's blog is quite interesting and has been very active recently. Any aspiring writer should follow it, as she and her writer friends know how the business works.
.
The obituaries on the Sammons site are well read, just as they are in newspapers.
.
Bill Ricks's blog has pictures of Ricky Reese's signs and pictures from the past.

Our link to MSN weather seems as good as any.
.
Wikipedia is useful for quick answers. We need to add a dictionary, but we haven't decided which one to use.
.
E-NEWS has it's own Google search strip.

Muscadines, Scuppernongs, Bullises --------------- Treutlen County Grapes Are Ready

.
They're all grapes. Before grocery stores started selling red and white thin skin versions, in the South when we mentioned "grapes" we were talking about those with thick skins and grown locally. The bronze ones were scuppernongs, and the purple ones were bullises.
.

.
Now you can find 15 or 20 patented varieties at the grape farm of Wayne and Barbara Fowler on GA 86 between GA 46 and US 221, northeast of Soperton. Just follow the signs for monster size grapes for eating out of the hand or for making old-fashioned preserves.
.

.
The Fowlers gathered 27 20-lb. boxes in two days this week. Douglas and Fran Braddy help them, as do Guadelope and Ostar. The growing operation is presently at 10 acres, but it hasn't always been that way.
.

.
They've been growing grapes for 20 years with the last 10 years being in commercial production. They have a walk-in cooler to preserve the freshness of the grapes. Experienced hand picking is necessary. A grape may look ripe, but the color has to be just right, and the touch of the hand is important, too. A visitor can pick grapes, him or herself, for $1.00 per pound. The price of ready-picked grapes is $1.25 per pound.
.

.
The grapes are grown with one-quart of 10-10-10 fertilizer per vine. The vines are watered from the drip irrigation system for three hours per day.
.

.
The vines can live up to 30 years, and some of the older Fowler vines are showing old age, with tree size trunks with scaly bark.
.

.
Grape vines are grown from seed, and the Fowlers have grown some themselves. But they now get their seedlings from Ison in Brooks, GA. Potted seedlings are available at the Fowlers'.
.

.
Wayne and Barbara have always been industrious people. Barbara retired from Planttel Communications in Soperton after 39 years and 3 months. Wayne was with UPS for 13 years and worked at several other jobs, including growing pine seedlings. Since grape season began the first of August, they will be very busy until the season ends in late September.
.

.
Signs show the way to the farm, which is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 7 pm. Call 912-529-3838 for directions or information. Even when they are in the fields the phone rolls over to their cell phones.
.

.
Yes, that is Mr. Will Peterson taking the tour.

Treutlen House Has Four Types of Pillars

.

.

.
Here, under an historic farm house in Treutlen County, are four types of pillars. Left to right: Concrete bricks on a concrete block; two stacked sandstone pillars, a whole sandstone pillar, and finally at the corner a length of heart pine log.
When you're out riding around, watch for the interesting things around you. Report it to the E-NEWS and we will share a picture with others. Love thy neighbor.

Old Pictures and New Signs

If you click on our link "Old Pictures and New Signs" you will be taken to the Bill Ricks of Soperton blog. He posts the pictures of the Soperton Signman's signs. He also posts old pictures from the 1970's. He has been interrupted lately by a failure in his negative scanner.
He has just posted the photos for June 1974 & 1979. You may enjoy looking at them.

Treutlen Sports Hall of Fame

.

.
Why doesn't Treutlen County have a Sports Hall of Fame? We need to honor those who have shown unusual physical prowess in local sports, especially school sports. Remember the stars of the six-man football team in the 1930's, the trophy-winning Hornets basketball teams, the track and fields stars of Holliday and Berry, Bill Bass's 1961 football team. More recent athletes, too.
.
TREUTLEN E-NEWS nominates Randy Dorsey for the Hall of Fame, partly for the reasons on the sign. Make your own nominations and give reasons by clicking on comments. Please leave us your e-mail address so we can contact you.

Soperton City Seal

.

.

.

.
If you stand near the railroad tracks beside the City Hall you can see the city seal in two places: On the water tank and the side of the City Hall. Test your knowledge with a few questions.
.
1- What year was the seal adopted?
2- What was painted on the water tank before the seal?
3- What was the City Hall building used for before the city acquired it?
4- What year was the City Hall building dedicated?
5- In the water tank picture, what brick building is shown at the bottom?
6- In the City Hall picture, what was the original use of the square-sided pole? (with lights and antenna)
.
