FARMERS Still Keeping Soperton on the Map

"Farmers Home Furniture opened its first store in Soperton, Ga., in 1949 with fairness, trust, quality and value in mind for the customer. The company said in a press release that it remains committed to those ideals today."

How many of these Range Fuels personnel do you know?

And what, exactly, do they do?

You may click around all over this  BUSINESS WEEK site to find background info on these Range Fuels people.  They all have several "relationships".  Maybe that's it - kinfolks.

HAROLD POWELL PRESENTS HIS COMPILATION ABOUT TREUTLEN COUNTY INDIAN ARTIFACTS

Library Board Member Will Peterson (left) and Treutlen County Librarian Mary Jane Smith (right) accept presentation of  Harold Powell's "TREUTLEN COUNTY INDIAN ARTIFACTS," his compilation of notes, photographs, articles, and maps of his lifetime hobby of finding and preserving of local artifacts left by the Native Americans who lived in the area over thousands of years.  Powell, with his son Danny and late wife Vivien Josey Powell, collected thousands of arrowheads, pottery fragments, and other remnants of ancient civilizations.
Book Cover

The 80-page notebook is accompanied by a CD, so users can view the pages on high resolution.  Pages of lower resolution have placed on the TREUTLEN E-NEWS's Picasa Web Albums, for the whole world to appreciate.  Comments may be posted on this blog post; also on the individual pages in the web album.  Please share with your friends by email.  E-NEWS posts are shared on Google Buzz, Twitter, and Facebook.

Harold's project will continue as a work in progress, as his notes are added as well as yours.

All of the collection was found in Treutlen and adjoining counties, the bulk being from Treutlen.  Powell did a very historically valuable deed, as he marked the locations of places he found artifacts on the Treutlen County map.  The map pages were copied with enough overlap that they can be printed and joined for a complete county map.

Deer Photos Welcome Here

Hunter Byrd (left) killed this nice young buck last week.  His brother Trevor saw another one, but it lived to grow bigger.

The E-NEWS welcomes game and fish photos, especially when kids are featured with them.

Bill Ricks made this photo when the Byrd boys came to Crow Mart to show off their morning's work to their grandpa, Buddy Byrd.

Bill likes to take pictures in his old age and retirement, so if you have something for him to photograph you may catch him at Crow Mart or his house. Check his front door for his cellphone number and call him. (He doesn't want everybody on the web reading it.)

NEW LOCAL WEBSITE ADDED
TO TREUTLEN E-NEWS

The Soperton Ice Plant has a new website, and they are using a name more identified with their antique business, ANTIQUES AT SIP.  The E-NEWS is happy to add their link.

If you have a local blog or website, we'd like to add it to our list of links.  We have two different sections of links:  One for strictly Treutlen County, and the other "Useful Links" which include area websites, such as Southeast Georgia Today (Vidalia) and The Blade Plus (Swainsboro), plus links that we've come across that seem useful.

The reason that some sites are shown in larger size with photos and words is that they have "feeds" that do that. The "Click to View" sites don't have "feeds".  The Blogger computers handle it automatically.

OPEN HOUSE - ALTAMAHA EMC in SOPERTON

Altamaha EMC has created one of Soperton's most beautiful, convenient facilities in several years. Last January the company acquired the building and lot formerly occupied by Steve's Automotive and cleaned it up.  Since early September Treutlen Countians have been amazed at the changes in the EMC property across the street from Piglet shopping center on North Second Street.
Tuesday, October 19, the public viewed the completely renovated buildings and yards, inside and out.  The company has rented the adjoining county property, where the old county shop was located, to keep poles and other materials to avoid trips to the Lyons headquarters.  That entire area has been uncircled with security fence.
The EMC also paved more than half of Camel Avenue and put the remainder in better condition it has ever been.  Some longtime residents have claimed that the dirt street was named for the humps in it.  The street is smooth now.
The accompanying slide show depicts many aspects of the Soperton Headquarters of Altamaha Electric Membership Corporation.

Range Fuels CEO Is in Elite Group

The Top 100 People in Bioenergy
#71. David Aldous, CEO, Range Fuels
Range Fuels has been practically back in stealth mode in 2009-10, focused less on proseletyzing for renewable fuels and more on delivering at its Soperton, Georgia facility. The good news – Range is up and running at a 4 Mgy demonstration level, now transitioning from methanol over to ethanol. In terms of gasification-based advanced biofuels, it has seized and now held first-mover advantage, and with its focus on wood-based biofuels will find itself with some additional advantages in building on existing infrastructure for assembling feedstock. Delivering the Range project in these nefarious economic times has been no small achievement for Aldous, even though the company has been disinclined to crow about it.

Please Support Our Animal Rescue!

J.LO
Maggie
Shakira

Buddy

I was wondering if you could help us spread the news about the Million Pines Animal Rescue that we have set up in Treutlen County? Nancy McDonald and Pennie Rowe are the co-founders of the group. The county has allowed us to use the kennels at the airport to house the dogs. We only have about 15 pens and about 50 dogs. We are having an Adoption Day on November 20th and hope to find these animals some great homes. We have several events scheduled for the day including a raffle for some special prizes. More details will be coming out soon. We are depending on the generosity of others for donations of food and money for vet expenses. We have a Facebook page: Million Pines Animal Rescue and also have some of our dogs posted on Petfinder. All donations of food, money or supplies are completely tax deductible.
Any way you can help us with getting the word out will be greatly appreciated. If you would like to call me for more info. you can reach me on my cell at 478-463-6805. Thanks for your help! I have attached pictures of a few of the dogs to this message.

USEFUL SITE!

Notes:
Good photo - the roses were in bloom.

Never heard the 1784 date before.  Wonder where it came from?

Wonder if today's population is really over 7,000?

Soperton is only 14 percent higher in millage than non-Soperton. It's worth it to me.
More people live in Soperton than outside.

Soperton is named for Benjamin Franklin Soper, who was affiliated with the railroad, but I've never seen evidence that he ever lived in Soperton or even visited.

REVIVAL, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24

Please come and fellowship with us!

New trend for doctors? Rather have a real job with hours?

Last year, half of new doctors were hired by hospitals, according to the Medical Group Management Association,  a professional organization for physician practices. According to a 2009 report by the AMA, 1 in 6 doctors works for a hospital, and the number is quickly growing.
(The VA has been employing doctors for a long time, apparently successfully  for doctors and the VA.)

Education is in the movies

"It's time to have a conversation about what's right in our schools, what's working. And as we debate what to do to fix the problems, let's remember that there are successes in education every day we can emulate." - Filmmaker George Lucas, commenting on "Beyond Superman"
